Governor pitching green incentives

Gov. Mitt Romney today will unveil a multimillion-dollar incentive that would give developers incentives to build affordable “green” housing.

At an event this morning in East Boston at the site of a new waterfront housing project, Romney is slated to unveil the Massachusetts Green Communities.

Romney's new program will provide millions in loans, grants and tax incentives to developers who build homes that are both affordable to low- and moderate-income buyers and that are environmentally sensitive as well.

For builders, that means incorporating such features as solar panels and recycled wood products into new homes.

And it also involves using “green” building techniques that help protect the environment by limiting the use of water, among other measures.

At this morning's event, Romney is expected to call for the production of 1,000 affordable “green” homes across the state in the next five years.

A mix of quasi‑governmental agencies and private foundations will pay for the initiative.

Officials from MassHousing, the Massachusetts Technology Collaborative, the Enterprise Foundation and the Renewable Energy Trust will be on hand with Romney to roll out the program.
