Small Times Media Ranks Massachusetts #2 in the U.S. for Top States for Nanotechnology
March 14, 2005: Small Times Magazine released its annual list of Top 10 States for Nanotechnology, with Massachusetts second only to California in the rankings. The Commonwealth ranked #2 in the 2003 rankings. It notes that "Massachusetts is beginning to look beyond Boston and its suburbs for ways to build up its expertise in micro and nanotechnology," citing the University of Massachusetts Amherst and Lowell campuses, which are both “prepared to tackle the next challenge facing industry: nanomanufacturing.”

Massachusetts, California best states for nanotech
Massachusetts, California and Colorado are the three states best poised to capitalize on nanotechnology, according to a study released Tuesday by Lux Research, which studies the industry.

LOWELL, MA (December 20, 2004): Massachusetts Technology Collaborative Executive Director Mitchell Adams today joined State Senator Steven Panagiotakos, University of Massachusetts Lowell Chancellor William T. Hogan as well as state and local officials to announce a $5 million award to develop a new Center of Excellence in Nanomanufacturing at UMass Lowell. This is the first major award provided by MTC’s John Adams Innovation Institute.
Massachusetts entrepreneurs take top two spots in the first International Nanotechnology Business Idea Competition
October 29, 2004 – Massachusetts-based entrepreneurs took the top two prizes in the International Nanotechnology Business idea Competition , sponsored by the Nano Network of Cleveland, and billed by the Nano Network as the first of its kind in the country.
The first and second place winners:
QD Vision, Inc. of Cambridge, Mass., is developing the next generation of flat panel displays using quantum dot light emitting diode devices and associated manufacturing techniques.
General Lighting Inc. of Boston designs low-power, low-cost carbon nanotube-based lighting elements for backlighting in mobile communications products.
