Tools for Strategic Investment
The John Adams Innovation Institute manages two public purpose state funds, making targeted, strategic investments.
The Innovation Institute Fund makes targeted investment to spur new engines of economic growth in sectors and regions throughout Massachusetts. These investments leverage public and private resources to support regional economic development initiatives to establish, retain, strengthen and expand the knowledge-based industries of the Massachusetts Innovation Economy. The two investment programs under this fund include:
- Regional Priority Awards target early-stage, small- to medium-scale projects that can move a region or an industry cluster forward. (solicitation up to $150,000)
- Project Awards target intermediate-scale projects that grow and strengthen industry clusters, identify and address unmet needs, and produce outcomes including measurable job growth, new business formation, increased economic activity, and new collaborations between companies (solicitation $250,000 - $500,000)
The Massachusetts Research Center Matching Fund makes investments to improve the probability of federal research rewards being won by Massachusetts’ academic research centers. These investments improve the economic benefit of the research enterprise to the Commonwealth, helping to strengthen industry clusters and leading to job creation and retention in the knowledge-based Innovation Economy.
- Research Center Matching Grant awards are leveraged investments to help Massachusetts’ universities and academic research centers win competitive federal research awards (20 percent match, up to $2 million)
- Collaborative R&D Partnership Development Grant awards support the development of new academic research centers or the expansion of existing research centers (up to $150,000)
- Center of Excellence awards invest in the creation of new research capacity and establish world-class Centers of Excellence in specific technology sectors to support new business formation and job growth ($2 million - $5 million).
