The CPOE Education Task Force is comprised of hospital CIOs, physicians and CPOE project leaders who will advise the Initiative about educational programming. The group met on August 21, 2007 to discuss the “hot topics” for hospitals and physicians embarking upon CPOE. Recognizing that all hospitals are in different stages of their CPOE implementation, the Massachusetts Hospital CPOE Initiative is taking the lead in identifying some of the most important and critical topics that hospitals need to know if they are going to be successful with their CPOE adoption. Many organizations are not in a position to allocate additional resources beyond what the vendors provide. What better way to reach out to hospitals than through the creation of peer learning environments that encourage collaboration. Through a combination of reports on best practices, testimony from field experts, and educational workshops, the Initiative is committed to support the needs of all hospitals implementing this technology. The names of the Education Task Force members can be found here. The group meets on an as needed basis. If you would like to become involved, please contact Bethany Gilboard at gilboard@masstech.org.
The Massachusetts Hospital CPOE Initiative recently hosted two learning opportunities. Nearly three dozen hospitals participated in the two hour workshops.
September 19, 2007 Workshop: Addressing the Challenges of Implementing CPOE Systems (Link to the meeting notes.)
Reid Coleman MD, Chief Medical Information Officer from Lifespan shared his key takeaways as he went through CPOE readiness and implementation at his five hospital system. Eighteen hospitals sent teams of CPOE physician leaders, CIOs and nursing leadership. A very interactive discussion was held addressing some of the key challenges to moving technology forward as well as helpful hints about areas to consider when moving forward. (See list of hospital participants.)
October 23, 2007 Workshop: Stuck in Pilot Mode? Not there yet? Anticipating the Potential Pit falls to a Successful CPOE Rollout. (Link to the meeting notes.)
A panel presentation was held at the Massachusetts Medical Society. Michael Blackman MD (CMIO) and Joe Diver (CIO) from Berkshire Health Systems, Robert Todd (Director of IT) and Greg Sophis (Director of Pharmacy) Mount Auburn Hospital and Michael Zacks MD (CMIO) at Newton Wellesley Hospital were the featured panelists for this engaging and robust discussion addressing how to best Roll Out CPOE in a hospital. Our panelists were responsible for their organization’s successful CPOE implementation and willingly shared the “good, bad and the ugly” about their respective rollouts. The forum provided an opportunity for hospitals, at various stages, to learn key takeaways and to share their experiences with the group. This program attracted nineteen hospitals that included pharmacists, physician and nursing leadership, CPOE project leaders and CIOs.
In the future, a variety of educational programs are planned, ranging from small to medium size roundtable discussions to larger educational workshops and conferences. The topics are structured to address a broad array of subjects in a setting that allows for a free exchange of ideas on practices that are working. Hospital teams are encouraged to take advantage of these free collaborative learning opportunities. All Massachusetts hospitals are notified electronically about upcoming programs. If there is a topic of interest for future programs that you would like the education task force to consider, send your ideas to gilboard@masstech.org.
MTC/NEHI engaged the First Consulting Group to conduct a national survey of hospitals facing the operational challenges of newly implemented CPOE systems. The specific issues that are covered include:
- Ongoing Support
- Optimizing CPOE
- Ongoing Management of Order Sets and CDS
- CPOE and Medication Reconciliation
- Downtime Procedures
The report includes a combination of onsite and telephone interviews with community hospitals that have a large number of physicians using CPOE. The report is due out in November and will be distributed to all Massachusetts hospitals and available on our website at masstech.org.
