CPOE Conference Held for Physician and Hospital Executives
The Massachusetts Technology Collaborative (MTC) and New England Healthcare Institute (NEHI) hosted their first educational CPOE conference, Physician Involvement and Governance, in collaboration with the Massachusetts Hospital Association, Massachusetts Council of Community Hospitals, Massachusetts Medical Society, and Masspro on January 11, 2007. One hundred individuals representing thirty-three Massachusetts community hospitals spent the day learning about physician governance models and committee structures, strategies for working with community medical staffs and their leadership, and the use of technology to improve the physician workflow process.

The program featured presentations from community hospital executives reporting on successful CPOE implementation. Dr. Michael Jellinek, President and CEO of Newton Wellesley Hospital, spoke about the critical importance of executive leadership in undertaking a CPOE initiative. Dr. Mitchell Scott Rein, Senior Vice President for Medical Affairs at North Shore Medical Center (NSMC) addressed how to create successful relationships with the medical staff and how to gain the “buy in” of community-based physicians as CPOE is adopted. Dr. Rein provided multiple examples of governance structures and strategies employed in his organization. Mark Hulse, RN, Chief Information Officer for NSMC, detailed the dynamics of rolling out CPOE and illustrated the relationship between IT, physicians, and the clinical staffs in adopting CPOE.

The day concluded with a case study presentation by Sue Sullivan, RN, and Dr. David Tupponce from Holyoke Medical Center who presented the Lean Health Care Process utilized to analyze physician workflow redesign in anticipation of implementing CPOE. The day was moderated by Dr. John Freedman. The conference provided a venue for networking with other hospital and physician executives who are responsible for CPOE implementation. The presentations are posted on our web site here.

Current Matters
Download a copy of our newest publication A Case Study on Physician Computerized Physician Order Entry: A Blueprint for a Beginning. This report chronicles the first year of the Massachusetts Inpatient CPOE Initiative and is a great resource for other states considering a
similar project.

Inova Sytems of Thailand has reproduced our CPOE e-health reports and translated them into Thai. Our publications are being circulated in a monthly newsletter aimed at connecting the healthcare IT community in Thailand.

Lessons Learned in Community Hospitals is now available in PowerPoint.

Looking Forward
The CPOE Project team is exploring innovative ways to create an interactive electronic community. We recognize that hospital executives involved in CPOE want to be able to exchange ideas and learn from their peers. This venue will complement the educational programming that we will continue to provide. Please feel free to share your ideas and suggestions for topics and educational programming. In addition, a resource library is under development to serve as a place to find helpful guides and documents that you might want to refer to as you move forward with developing implementation plans. The materials will come from your peers both within Massachusetts and beyond. Please e-mail gilboard@masstech.org with your ideas.
