Things to Determine Before Applying

To ensure an efficient and smooth process, a customer should verify as much of the following information as possible before applying for interconnection. Knowing this information in advance will also help determine which review process to apply for and which forms to fill out.

System characteristics:
Type of generator (and inverter where applicable), transformer, circuit, protective relay, equipment locations

Your generator type, location, and other system characteristics will largely determine which review process you go through. You may need to provide some or all of the information to the left on your application, particularly for the expedited or standard process.

Which Review Process?

Equipment certification and protection measures

To remove safety and reliability risks, all systems are required to meet certain technical protection requirements. Notice of certified equipment may also be required on the application form.

Location on network system

One factor that determines which process you go through is whether your system is on a radial system, spot network, or area network on the electric grid. While it is not possible to determine whether your exact location is on a network before applying, the link to the right gives general network locations and issues that may arise with network interconnection.

Permitting requirements

A variety of permits are required for distributed generation beyond the interconnection process. In particular, the utilities require you to note on your application whether air permits have been received.
