The recently constructed 234,500 square foot Whitman-Hanson Regional High School is at the forefront of a growing trend in Massachusetts towards green schools. The school represents an environmentally friendly and economical solution to overcrowding at the aging facility formerly on the same site.

Green features include a 49.5 kilowatt solar system mounted on the gymnasium roof, improved energy efficiency of the building’s envelope and mechanical systems, and high-efficiency appliances. A storm water recycling system collects rainwater from the school roof, funnels it to a 20,000 gallon storage tank, and uses it for sewage conveyance.

Boston’s CBS Channel 4 featured the school in a broadcast on saving energy.

As energy prices have continued to rise, more school districts have been building or considering green schools for their long-term savings. The added health and productivity benefits associated with green schools add to their appeal.
