Clustered Photovoltaics (PV) Installation Grant Recipients

 

Rob Pratt, Director of Renewable Energy Trust awarded MIT $455,701 for Solar-to-Market Initiative. This grant was part of $2.6m that was awarded on October 10, 2002 at the semi-annul meeting of SEBANE.

Cape & Islands Self Reliance Corporation
Primary Applicant: Cape & Islands Self Reliance Corporation
Project Summary: As part of the ongoing Green Citizens Energy Project, Cape & Islands Self Reliance Corporation (Self Reliance) will coordinate the design and installation of about 100 kW of PV via 100 individual systems. On Martha’s Vineyard, Kate Warner of Under the Sun will facilitate at least 25 of these systems as a key partner to Self Reliance. On Cape Cod, the partners are TJ Design, and Building Diagnostics. Self Reliance will be working closely with local vocational schools, as well as with the local electrical trades to increase the PV knowledge base in the region. The PV systems will be primarily marketed for homes and businesses, but schools and municipalities may apply, also.

Center for Ecological Technology | Website
Primary Applicant: Center for Ecological Technology
Project Summary: The Center for Ecological Technology (CET) has a 25 year history offering outreach, education, and services related to energy issues. A key partner of CET is Berkshire PhotoVoltaic Services (BPVS) who have nearly 20 years experience with PV systems in the Berkshires. CET’s goal is to install at least 50 kW of PV through a series of high visibility installations. CET will be leveraging a Northeast Region Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education grant with the MTC grant in order to site PV on Berkshire County farms. Additionally, local colleges and businesses will be recruited as host sites for PV systems.

Conservation Services Group | Website
Primary Applicant: Conservation Services Group
Project Summary: This grant will be coordinated with the Energy Star Homes program that is administered locally by Conservation Services Group, sponsored by the US Department of Energy and the US Environmental Protection Agency, and co-funded by local gas and electric utilities. The Energy Star Homebuilders that will work with CSG are Contemporary Country Builders of Northampton, Transformations of Townsend, and DiPlacido Development Corporation of Wrentham. The targeted 38 PV installations will be designed as integrated systems by these homebuilders who are developing new energy efficient sub-divisions. PV system designs will be coordinated by Irradiance, Inc. of Lincoln, MA, and by the PV manufacturer Evergreen Solar of Marlborough, MA.

Cooperative Development Institute | Website
Primary Applicant: Cooperative Development Institute
Project Summary: Installation of approximately 25 PV systems on homes and businesses in the Franklin Regional Council of Governments area (Franklin County, plus Phillipston, Athol, and Amherst). The goal is to leverage this grant to install at least 50 kW of PV. Cooperative Development Institute's primary partners are Pioneer Valley Photovoltaics (PV)2 and Sunnyside Solar. A variety of PV system sizes will be offered and customized to meet the needs of the PV system owner.

Massachusetts Energy Consumers Alliance |Website
Primary Applicant: Massachusetts Energy Consumers Alliance
Project Summary: Installation of approximately 40 PV systems in Boston, Newton, Brookline and Somerville. The City of Newton is a major partner on this team and has committed to installing PV on at least six City buildings. The Fenway Community Development Corporation has also committed to installing 10 kW of PV in the Fenway neighborhood. The partner responsible for PV system design and project management will be Zapotec Energy of Cambridge, MA. Massachusetts Energy Consumers Alliance’s goal is install 100 kW of PV. In addition to the sites listed above, many environmental and community action groups are planning to install PV systems at their offices under this grant. Individual homeowners and businesses are also encouraged to apply.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology | Website
Primary Applicant: Massachusetts Institute of Technology
Project Summary: Installation of approximately 75 kW of PV systems on schools, homes and businesses in Cambridge, Watertown, Arlington, Lexington, and Waltham as well as on the MIT campus. The MIT campus installations will be used as pilots for demonstration, research, and educational purposes. MIT has also developed a cooperative relationship with the Cambridge Public Schools that will result in several PV installations on public school buildings. MIT expects to oversee the installation of approximately 40 PV installations through this grant. The primary partners to MIT are Conservation Services Group and Evergreen Solar. The project will be coordinated through the MIT Department of Facilities in conjunction with the MIT Laboratory for Energy and the Environment.
